Turn Photo Text into a Searchable PDF: Output and Limits

A searchable PDF contains text you can select and find. There are two different ways to make one from a photograph: preserve the photo and add an OCR text layer, or build a new PDF from the recognized words. Our Image to PDF converter uses the second approach.

The distinction matters. If you need a photographic record of a receipt, a signature or a diagram, keep the original image. This converter produces a text-based working copy, not a visually identical archive.

Prepare one clear photo

Photograph the page straight-on with even lighting. Check that small letters are readable, crop unrelated background and use the original file where possible. JPG and PNG are suitable starting formats. Larger images may be resized and compressed before OCR; the workflow does not promise lossless image preservation.

Convert photo text to PDF

1. Open the Image to PDF tool and upload one image.
2. Allow OCR to recognize the text and generate the PDF.
3. Open the downloaded file and compare its words, numbers and reading order with the source.

Free use allows three conversions per day with files up to 4MB. The uploader accepts one file at a time and does not merge several photos into one PDF. For edits, you can also use Image to Word or copy the recognized text into a document editor.

Check the output before using it

Search for a word you can see in the original. Check dates, reference numbers and monetary amounts character by character. Review table columns and line order. OCR may mistake O for 0 or lose punctuation. A searchable file is not necessarily an accurate file.

Keep the original when appearance matters

A reconstructed text PDF may use different fonts, spacing and page breaks, and it does not retain the source photograph. Keep original receipts and signed documents. If you need a PDF that looks like the photograph, use an image-preserving PDF workflow; if it also needs searchable text, choose a tool that explicitly supports an aligned OCR layer.

Choose a practical workflow for several pages

For a few pages, convert each image separately and check each result. For a large archive, use software designed for batch scanning, page management and image-preserving OCR. Do not assume single-image conversion will provide those functions.

Processing and privacy

Images are sent through our server to Google Cloud Vision for OCR. Exported PDFs are generated in your browser from the recognized text. See our data-processing explanation before uploading confidential material.
